05:04 pm - Being mailed this afternoon. An open letter to President Barack Obama and +The White House
Dear Mr. President,
My name is Jacob Tessler and I am an American citizen. I am writing this letter to you via any number of social media forums, as well as sending a copy by post. Given the incredible volume of mail that you must receive, I have to admit that I find it dubious that this will reach your eyes, and so I turn to the online community to boost the signal and send this as far and wide as we can.
Since my youth I have been taught to respect our country, its flag, and more importantly – its ideals. I can keenly recall learning in school that the history of our country was founded upon one, single, idea – that all Mankind, thus including women, are created equal and are endowed with certain inalienable rights. Our country was started because of the tyrannical oppression by the government of the common person in contradiction to all common sense, ethics, and good moral quality.
I have spent the first part of my, admittedly brief, life training to serve my country and its youth as a teacher. I, as well as my wife, teach in the public school system where we put in countless hours, stress, and heartache into trying to help our children grow up to be proud, respectful, citizens of our country. It is a heavy duty, no less or more so than your own or any public servant - such as the soldier or clerk, but it is one that we accept with grace, humility, and the gravitas that our profession, and our art, requires.
I was taught to respect our country, and so do I teach my students to respect our country; even when we do not agree with its actions.
As such, I am forced to ask you why my government has seemingly begun to declare war upon my wife? As a married man, I can only assume that you likewise share my view that one may say any manner of ill word about ourselves, but an attack upon our wives is the surest, swiftest, and most certain way of rousing us to action. As men of good conscience, I can only assume that you share my concern regarding the current trend of politics to remove a woman’s right to choose the fate of her own body. I cannot imagine a world in which I, as a man and as a husband, look to my wife and presume to tell her how she must conduct the particularly feminine affairs of her body. I submit to you, sir, that neither of us are quite qualified to conduct those affairs, having no personal experience and only a passing acquaintance with the notions.
I write to you, sir, as an American citizen, a husband, and a public servant. I am writing to you to beg you not to make a liar of me when I teach our next generation that our country respects the universal ideals of freedom, truth, and liberty. I am writing to you to beg, beseech, and pray that you will use every ounce of your influence, position, rank, charisma, and sway to stop any and all attempts to violate the most basic and simple rights written into the constitution of our country. We are called the “Land of the Free” and as such expect the following things: • Freedom from any form of oppression. • Freedom to practice, or not, a religion as we see fit. • Freedom to not be forced to adhere to the religious laws of others. • Freedom to build a family, or not, as we see fit and composed of what members we see fit.
Mr. President, these are not unusual, arcane, or strange concepts; they are the basis for the documents upon which our country was founded. I close with the sincere hope that my words have not fallen on deaf ears, and that you will heed my simple request:
_Please, Mr. President, do not allow anyone to take away the rights of this nation’s women with respect to their own bodies, reproductive organs, free will, or choice. _
Sincerely, Jacob Tessler 10th Grade English Teacher
